Généralités

Tout couple redox est constitué d’une forme Ox et d’une forme Red reliées par la demi réaction:

L’échange d’électrons fait obligatoirement intervenir deux couples :

Un titrage d’oxydoréduction est un dosage qui permet de déterminer la concentration d’une solution oxydante par addition d’un réactif titrant réducteur de titre connu (étalon) ou vice versa.

  • La comparaison des potentiels normaux E° de deux couples entrant en jeu dans une réaction d’oxydoréduction et le calcul de la constante d’équilibre permettent de vérifier si une réaction sera complète (quantitative). Cependant, cette comparaison ne donne aucun renseignement sur la vitesse de la réaction.
  • Les conditions expérimentales sont à déterminer pratiquement : nécessité de chauffage, effet de la variation du pH, catalyseurs …

Exemple : la réaction de KMnO4 avec l’acide oxalique est rapide à 80°C et aussi catalysée par les Mn2+ .

Titrage Redox (Potentiomètrie) Changement du potentiel

Le suivi de la variation du potentiel électrique dans la solution en fonction du volume de titrant ajouté permet de visualiser le degré d’avancement d’un titrage redox et de déterminer l’intervalle de potentiel au sein duquel a lieu l’équivalence afin de mieux choisir l’indicateur à utiliser. Les courbes de titrages peuvent être prévues théoriquement par calcul.

Exemple

Soit une solution de Fe2+ à titrer (de concentration [Fe^2+] \textit{inconnue} ) disposée dans un erlenmayer ou un bécher et continuellement agitée, par une solution de cérium (IV) de titre connu [Ce4+] placée dans une burette. (un voltmètre; une électrode platine (Pt), une électrode de Référence.):
E°(Fe3+/ Fe2+) = 0,77 V et E° (Ce4+/ Ce3+) = 1,61V.

La réaction de titrage est :

Titrage de 100 mL d’une solution 0,1 M de fer II par une solution de cérium IV 0,1M en milieu acide sulfurique.

    • Mise en évidence visuellement du point d'équivalence :
    • soit le réactif lui-même (KMnO_4 ou Cr_2O_7^{2-}) en excès: (colorations rose ou orangé).
    • soit un indicateur dont les formes Red et Ox de colorations différentes, introduit en faible quantité.
    • Le choix de l'indicateur est conditionné par E^{\circ} qui doit être proche de celui du point équivalent.

    Pour un ind: E^0 se situe dans la courbe de dosage, à l’intérieur du saut de E; la zone sensible dans la région correspondant à ce saut.

    Le saut de E: correspond à \Delta E_{ind}

    Choisir de préférence un Indicateur ayant 0,15V de \Delta E^\circ avec les deux couples participant au titrage.

    1,10-phénanthroline

    Férroïne :

    C'est l'un des meilleurs indicateurs redox. Elle forme avec le Fe2+ un complexe stable, intensément coloré en rouge foncé appelé ferroïne.

    Cet indicateur a un comportement idéal. Le changement de couleur est intense et réversible.

    L’introduction de substituants divers permet de faire varier le potentiel de la zone de virage.

    5-nitro-1,10-phenanthroline (nitroferroïne)

    E^{\circ} = 1,25 V \
    titrages avec Ce{IV} dans l’acide nitrique ou perchlorique.

    4,7-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (dimethylferroïne)

    E^{\circ} = 0,88 V
    titrages avec le dichromate en milieu H_2SO_4 .

    Diphénylamine

    La diphénylamine s’oxyde d’abord en diphénylbenzidine incolore, qui s’oxyde elle-même pour donner une diquinone colorée.
    Une coloration bleu-violette intense est obtenue au point final.
    Souvent utilisée en solution dans l’acide sulfurique pour le dosage du Fe^{2+} par le dichromate.

    Réactifs servants eux-mêmes d’indicateurs

    Le permanganate de potassium en est l’exemple le plus connu. Une goute suffi à donner une coloration perceptible à des centaines de mL de solutions incolores ou faiblement colorées (Fer III).

    La coloration des solutions d’iode ou de sulfate de cérium IV peut indiquer la fin d’un titrage, (essai blanc souvent nécessaire), mais pour diminuer l’erreur de titrage il est plus approprié d’utiliser des indicateurs internes tels que la ferroïne.

    Indicateurs spécifiques

    L’indicateur spécifique présente une coloration particulière en présence d’un réactif donné.

    L’exemple le plus connu est celui de l’empois d’amidon qui donne une coloration bleu intense en présence d’iode.

    Le thiocyanate de potassium utilisé lors du dosage du fer(III) par un agent réducteur (sulfate de titane(III) par exemple) indique la fin du titrage par la disparition de la coloration rouge due au complexe fer(III)-thiocyanate.

    Potentiométrie

    • Le suivi potentiométrique d’un titrage redox permet une détermination fiable du point équivalent. Les applications automatisées (titrateurs automatiques) sont nombreuses.
    • Le montage est constitué d’une électrode redox indicatrice et d’une électrode de référence introduite dans la solution titrée et liées à un potentiomètre. (Voir cours potentiométrie).
